Re: Updated Adobe Reader on two machines with one requiring a shutdown/restart. Both run Windows 7 Home - 64-bit. I do not recall having to do this (shutdown/restart) in prior updates. Why is it asking to do this

The updating is done by something called "Windows Installer". It tries to replace the files, and when it can't, it asks for a reboot - the job is finished after the reboot.

So it depends whether the files are in use. You can't know which files are needed, but you should always start by closing ALL OTHER apps and windows including browser and windows explorer. Adobe Reader installs system components that could be used by any app.
