Does it go off if you deselect View - Extras?
Yes, indeed it does. But it doesn't stay off after resaving the image, closing it and re-opening it. The problem doesn't affect all psd files, just one in particular. Maybe if I save all my new presets etc and reset all tools that might be an answer - though it's a bit of a sledgehammer.
