In my opinion the Color Replacement Tool is worthless for serious work and trying to use it for this is a waste of time.
But you should consider the difference between »Color« and »Luminance«.
If you have a Mask already create a Group, apply the Layer Mask and insert the necessary /Adjustment) Layers.
